Work related respiratory disease
Are you aware that working conditions have produced the following statistics:
- Approximately 30, 000 workers report breathing or lung problems
- 2010 saw 261 cases of occupational asthma being seen by the medical profession
- Approximately 7000 cases of work related lung disease are seen by GPs
- 4000 people die each year due to past exposure to substances within the work place.
Workers may be affected when they are exposed to fumes, dust, gases and vapours which can cause lung damage. Exposure may result in asbestosis, silicosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, emphysema and lung cancer.
The HSE provide excellent information about work related respiratory disease; further information can be found at http://www.hse.gov.uk/lung-disease/index.htm
